An exhibition, chronicling the journey of fashion through three centuries, from the devastating French Revolution till the opulent Belle Epoque era, is currently going on at the Museu de Belles Arts de València, Spain.

Scheduled to run through January 2014, the exhibit is titled as the ‘Moda?, Octavo arte? Arte e indumentaria de la Revolución Francesa a la Belle Epoque’, which translates to ‘Fashion? Eighth art ? Art and clothing of the French Revolution to the Belle Epoque’ in English.

Divided into two parallel segments, visual arts and fashion, the event displays artworks and fashion pieces from the 18th century European intellectual cultural movement ‘Age of Enlightenment’ and the peaceful period between the two world wars.

With a primary aim to highlight the evolution of clothing through the centuries, the exhibit charts the change of women’s fashion trends, right from the 18th century corsets to 19th century’s Empire style dresses and ultimately the liberal shorter skirts.

The event also focuses on the influence of powerful women like the empress and wife of Napoleon-III Eugénie de Montijo over fashion in these periods.

The featured fashion exhibits include creations from the famous twentieth-century French couturier Paul Poiret and Spanish fashion designer and painter Mariano Fortuny.

The exhibition’s visual arts segment features pieces from artists like Agustín Esteve, Vicente López, Zacarias Gonzalez Velazquez, Vicente Rodes, José Madrazo, Salvador Martinez Cubells, Antonio Cortina, Ignacio Pinney Camarlench, Emilio Sala, José Benlliure, Joaquin Sorolla, Cecilio Pla, José Mongrell Joseph Pinney and Amadeo Roca.
