An exhibition, exploring the influence of indigenous Native American designs on modern fashion trends, is set to open at the Heard Museum North Scottsdale, Arizona.
Tagged as the ‘American Indian Fashion: from Lloyd Kiva New to Now’, the event aims to emphasize on how the Indian fashion and designs are being used as tools of self expression by the Native artists to further strengthen their Native identity.
Slated to take place from November 23, 2013 to October 26, 2014, the exhibit also stresses on the importance of fabrics, designs, styles and accessories that are being incorporated in clothing to re-establish Native tradition and culture.
Sourced from the Heard Museum collection and other private collections, the display will include 1950’s apparels, designed by the famous Cherokee fashion talent Lloyd Kiva New from Scottsdale.
Also creations from other Native American designers like Kay Bennett (Navajo), Margaret Wood (Navajo), Ramona Sakiestewa (Hopi), Virgil Ortiz (Cochiti Pueblo), Pilar Agoyo (Ohkay Owingeh/Cochiti Pueblo/Santo Domingo Pueblo) and Patricia Michaels (Taos Pueblo) will be featured at the exhibit.
