Toronto fashion week gets underway with Mikael Kale's show

London’s Central Saint Martins’ grad Mikhael Kale opened the five-day-long Canadian bi-annual soiree Toronto fashion Week with his latest fall/winter 2014 catwalk show.

The 29-year-old Toronto-based designer incorporated shiny silver studs into the ruched waist and detailed shouldered creations. The range showcased motorcycle jackets, curve-hugging minty blue and fuchsia coloured gowns, black leather dresses, knee-length coats and sheer organza numbers.

Luxury ready-to-wear Canadian label VAWK, owned by designer Sunny Fong, presented a sharp, elegant range on the opening day. With a special focus on pleating and animal skin textures, the line included black, white and metallic toned woollen suits and sexy thigh-skimming dresses with unique python skin textures.

Toronto-based Line Knitwear, headed by long-time designer friends John Muscat and Jennifer Wells, infused textured patterns into its new runway collection based on a mixed palette of neutral tones, midnight blue, ivory, burgundy and fuchsia.

The pieces included crocodile skin moto jackets, calf-hair skirts, velvet shorts, leather sweaters, angoras, cropped tops, miniskirts, crew-necked jumpers, fitted pencil skirts, sleeveless vests and long sweater dresses.

The first day of the World Mastercard Fashion Week also displayed ensembles from the famous contemporary womenswear brand Beaufille (founded and helmed by designer sisters Chloe and Parris Gordon) as well as the New York-trained local designer Sid Neigum.
