Eco Fashion Week shows ethical lines & reworked garments

Canadian designers once again showcased their ethically produced fashion lines at the just wrapped up eighth edition of Eco Fashion Week.

The Vancouver-based stylist, editor and entrepreneur Ghazal Elhaei displayed a very menswear-style formalwear collection under the event’s Thrift Chic Challenge, which asks the participants to create runway worthy pieces from second hand finds. Replete with clean-cut lines, the featured pieces included suits, ties and blazers.

Young emerging fashion designer Jerome Insorio presented a lightweight, comfortable spring/summer line. Incorporated with subtle layers, the casualwear ensembles were based in mainly neutrals with occasional pops of red and coral.

Lauren and Lyndsey, the designer duo from Hey Jude, showcased an early 1990’s-inspired range. Based in a pastel palette of light blue, minty green and lavender hues, the collection, comprising clean cut cropped tops and high-waisted trousers, was adorned with metallics, floral prints and sequins.

Part of the event’s 68lb Challenge, where contestants display reworked old garments, designer Tammy Joe, from the label Young Oak, staged a catwalk parade with pieces made from unused throw away apparels, fabrics and blankets. Peppered with a 1940’s vintage vibe, the cropped tops, shorts and skirts were based in shades of yellow, green and red.

In addition to the runway shows, several informative seminars, on topics related to environmental protection issues such as how to reduce carbon footprints and dispose off old clothes in ethical manner, were also organized on the sidelines of the three-day Canadian event.

Attended by a host of designers, industry professionals and stylists, the seminars featured speeches delivered by the likes of Mine & Yours Boutique’s owner Jigme Nehring, Chief Marketing Officer of Value Village, Karin Koonings, and Vancouver-based fashion designer Jason Matlo.

Additionally a pop-up-shop, showcasing vintage ties, sweaters and shirts from the world’s leading names like Lavin, Christian Dior, Hermes and YSL, was also set up at the fashion week venue.
