A collection of nearly 40 original ancient Greek costumes, replete with signature pleats, geometric designs and intricate embroidery, is currently on display at the Athens-based Hellenic Cosmos museum’s Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation.

Tilted as ‘Traces of grandeur. A new look at the tradition of Greek female costume’, the exhibit includes both everydaywear and formalwear women’s clothing from the 18th to early 20th century.

The display includes a richly embroidered suit from Astypalaia, part of the island group Dodecanese, a colourful bejewelled garment of Thessaly Stefanovik and an inlaid brocade dress from Jannena, Epirus.

A separate section of the exhibition showcases a court dress worn by the first queen of independent Greece, Amalia of Oldenburg (1837), and an outfit belonging to the queen’s late 19th century successor, Olga, a Russian-born consort of George I.

The display was earlier exhibited at London’s Hellenic Centre with the title ‘Patterns of Magnificence: Tradition and Reinvention in Greek Women’s Costume’.

In addition to the 40-piece display, the event in the British capital also hosted talks and panel discussions related to Greek fashion, which were conducted by eminent fashion personalities like Greek-Austrian born designer Marios Schwab.
