Grace of Monaco highlights Grace Kelly's vintage wardrobe

A harmonious melange of cinema and high-fashion can be seen in the latest American-French biopic ‘Grace of Monaco’, which offers a sartorial feast for fashion lovers who still vouch for the 1960’s classic trends.

Based on the life of late Hollywood actress and Princess of Monaco-Grace Kelly, the film showcases an array of recreated as well as newly designed pieces, loosely inspired from the vintage designer wardrobe as well as archived photographs of the late screen diva.

Designed by the movie’s costume designer Gigi Lepage, the ensembles include an ivory dress, replicated from a 1956 creation by Lanvin designer Antonio del Castillo. The Philadelphia-born American star wore that outfit, teamed up with sash, star and badge of Monaco’s Order of Saint-Charles, in 1959 during a state visit with French President Charles de Gaulle in Paris.

Additionally, a blue ball gown, worn by Nicole Kidman, who is playing the titular role in the movie, in the Red Cross ball scene, is also a loosely inspired copy of a vintage Swarovski crystal embellished Jean Dessès design.

Other than Lepage, famous fashion houses like Christian Dior also reproduced two women’s suits, including a gray Gamin skirt suit from the label’s fall 1961 haute couture collection, designed by the then artistic director Marc Bohan. Also, a skirt suit from the French luxury brand Chanel’s fall 2012 haute couture collection and silk scarves from accessory label Hermès have been donned by the protagonist in the film.

In addition to Chanel and Dior, the movie also showcases Tim Roth, who plays Prince Rainier III, in Smalto suits and Charvet shirts. Actors Parker Posey, who essays the lady-in-waiting Madge Tivey-Faucon’s character, and Jeanne Balibar (Countess Baciocchi) can be seen sporting Balenciaga ensembles in the film.

Grace of Monaco, which has been recently screened at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival, is directed by Olivier Dahan and written by Arash Amel.
