The first leg of Spring/Summer 2015 catwalk celebration kicked off with the much-awaited edition of the American bi-annual soiree Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York.

The clothing design company Nicholas K, owned by the designer siblings Nicholas and Christopher Kunz, opened the eight-day event with its latest runway presentation inspired from the journeys of late 18th century Swiss explorer and writer Isabelle Eberhardt. Made using fluid lightweight fabrics, the range included utilitarian safari style outfits, accented with leather knee patches and fringes, in tones of white, black, sand, olive and khaki.

The New York-based fashion designer Richard Chai featured both menswear and womenswear creations at the soiree. Titled as Love, the metallic heavy women’s line included a shiny green trench coat, a lavender slip dress with ruffled hems, a patchwork pleated dress in electric blue, a acid yellow short flared coat, a white dress, a pair of black biker shorts, ribbed tank tops and drop shoulder shirts. The 2010 CFDA winner displayed his signature athletic and streetwear detailing through his new collection for men. Enhanced with modern prints, bold stripes and interesting panels, the range featured shirts, shorts, jackets and oversized trenches.

Max Azria, the Tunisian designer behind the contemporary women's clothing brand BCBG Max Azria, chose bohemian-inspired looks based in frosty shades of pastels for his latest collection which showcased a gray-violet silk wrap dress with a quilted belt in pink, a lavender hued sleeveless number, an antique rose coloured V-neck dress, a white oversized jacket, an embroidered moto jacket, a cotton skirt and a cotton mesh embroidered top.

The Barcelonan casualwear label Desigual celebrated its 30th anniversary with a vibrantly coloured and printed range on the New York runway. Designed by the brand’s long-time collaborator of French origin Christian Lacroix, the line was inspired from the Mediterranean elements, South American motifs, blooms of English gardens and the beautiful landscapes of Iberian Peninsula. The featured pieces include an array of flowing feminine poppy red, saffron and teal hued dresses in varying lengths adorned with motifs of daisies, desert roses, hibiscus and Mexican dahlias. (PB)
