Diana Vreeland and Nancy Cunard inspire NYFW designers

The New York City-based fashion designer Michael Kors presented a 1950s influenced Spring/Summer 2015 collection meant for the fashion savvy active and busy women of today on the penultimate day of the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week New York.
Inspired from the late French-born fashion columnist Diana Vreeland, the Harper’s Bazaar’s photographer Louise Dahl-Wolfe and the American dancer and choreographer Agnes de Mille, the range was decorated with embroidered yellow buttercups and bright pink peonies as well as intricate beadwork.
Made using linen, cotton, tulle and taffeta fabrics, the collection’s standouts were swingy simple cut full skirts with rose print, gingham and tartan checks, white shirts with French cuffs, navy peacoats, floral print blue pyjamas, Breton striped knitwear pieces, sailor-style jeans and cardigans.
The independent spirit of the 20th century British writer and political activist Nancy Cunard was captured in the latest catwalk presentation by the Indian-American fashion designer and costumer Bibhu Mohapatra. The highlights from the 42-year-old’s show were a black and white jacquard skirt and top combo, hand-woven silk and organza shifts, fitted leather dresses and a flowing basket weave patterned asymmetrical column gown.
Jason Wu, the NYC-based Taiwanese Canadian fashion designer behind the German luxury fashion and style house Hugo Boss’ womenswear section, infused both relaxed, tailored and structured armour like silhouettes in his sportswear-accented wearable designs, which included draped sheath dresses in light shades of lace, precisely cut navy suits and sharp leatherwear.
The Los Angeles-based label Clover Canyon showcased an Oriental aesthetics-influenced line replete with martial arts belts and quirky takes on cheongsams and the Parsons’ school grad Anna Sui presented a print heavy collection rich with moon, star and animal motifs as well as metallic jacquard fabrics at the American soiree.
