An extensive array of European innerwear, dating back to the 1600s through the present day, has become the subject of an exhibit currently going on at the Queensland Museum, Brisbane.

Titled as ‘Undressed: 350 Years of Underwear in Fashion’, the event, which has been co-organized by London’s Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), features more than 80 pieces that have never been on public display before.

Slated to run through February 1, 2015, the exhibit aims to chart the evolution of lingerie from its constrictive days of wearing uncomfortable suffocating iron corsetry to the avant-garde technologically enhanced comfy skimpy creations of today.

Some of the major attractions include a rare 1600 century iron corset meant for women who had permanently damaged their spines from tying their corsets too tightly, an 1850’s steel cage crinoline petticoat, and a pair of 1860s drawers right from the wardrobes of Queen Victoria monogrammed with the royal cypher ‘VR’ meaning Victorian Regina.

Also several satin Wonderbras and old age panniers alongside new age pieces designed by the likes of Balenciaga, Versace, Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul-Gaultier have become part of the expansive exhibition. (PB)
