Peru organises contest to promote fashion design

Peru recently organised the preliminary version of Jovenes Creadores al Mundo (Young Creators to the World), a young designer’s competition that aims to internationalise the local textile industry by nurturing and promoting up and coming talents.

Supported by the minstry of foreign trade and tourism (Mincetur), the event saw garments, made using Peru-produced alpaca and cotton fibres, from 24 design students and emerging labels.

Themed as Modern Mysticism, the creations, inspired from the country’s fables, desires, myths and stories, represented Peru in a contemporary manner.

The minister and president of the Board of Promperú, Magali Silva Velarde-Alvarez, said the apparels highlighted at the contest showcases the country’s style status and urban glamour to the world.

She emphasised on the competition’s motto of globalising the industry by preparing and launching new design professionals on the international platform.

Due to be held within the framework of upcoming catwalk event Peru Moda 2015, scheduled for April 15 to 17, 2015, the final stage of 11th Jovenes Creadores al Mundo will feature collections from four participants selected by the evaluation commission.

The earlier winners of the contest have showcased in several international ready-to-wear and ethical fashion-centric events hosted in countries like Mexico and France. Some of the globally recognised contest winners are Claudia Jiménez, Gleny Castro, Lucía Cuba and Amaro Casanova. (PB)
