Italian Style: Fashion Since 1945, the touring exhibit chronicling the journey of Italian fashion from post World War II era to present day is well on its way to its next destination, Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Nashville.

Due to take place from June 5 to September 7, 2015, the event aims to explore the development of womenswear and menswear with an unwavering focus on key designers, outstanding techniques, materials and expertise that have contributed to Italy’s reputation for quality and style.

Based on new archival research, the exhibition will feature some 90 garments and accessories designed by iconic Italian fashion houses, including Dolce and Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Missoni, Prada, Pucci, Valentino and Versace.

Also couture and bold ready-to-wear creations from next generation names such as Giambattista Valli, Fausto Puglisi and Valentino’s new designer duo Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli have been included in the display.

Arranged chronologically, the exhibition begins with the post-WWII recovery years when Italian economy was trying to resurrect itself by retooling factories and clothing designers and textile manufacturers were gradually returning to business.

The exhibit later moves on to the famous 1950s Sala Bianca catwalk shows in Florence. This era also marks the popularity of Hollywood films like ‘The Barefoot Contessa’ and ‘Roman Holiday’ which showed actors such as Audrey Hepburn, Ava Gardner and Gregory Peck wearing Italian clothing on and off sets.

“The exhibition features dresses and suits worn by movie stars and directors,” explained Frist Center curator Trinita Kennedy in a press statement.

The exhibit has been originally organised by Sonnet Stanfill, curator of 20th-century and contemporary fashion at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Speaking about the display, the Tennessee museum’s executive director and CEO, Susan H Edwards, said, “Encouraged by the success of our 2010 presentation of The Golden Age of Couture: Paris and London 1947–57 and the strong working relationship we have established with the V & A, we are pleased to present another dazzling exhibition of design from fashion houses that have become familiar, if not household names. The passionate responses of visitors to The Golden Age of Couture confirmed the cross-cultural appeal of good design and its power to inspire scholarly study as well as conversations about beauty and material culture.” (PB)
