Featuring designs from names like Calvin Klein, Jean Paul Gaultier and Vivienne Westwood, the exhibition has been organised chronologically beginning with a section that highlights the practical aspects of intimate apparels. The second segment focuses on the use of innerwear, particularly the figure constricting 18th century corsets, to define a woman’s shape and seduce men.
The display later moves on to bras and girdles, showcasing the significant role played by technology in the evolution of inner garments. Also lingerie fashions from the 20th century have been included in the exhibit.
Some of the major attractions include a black lace detailed hot pink 1890s corset made from silk satin, an 1860s blue silk corset and several other dainty and delicate pieces. The Madame Lash-devoted section features bras, g-strings, bloomers, a ruffled 1981 white and pink corset, and a metal embellished white leather corset with frilly details.
Lingerie creations worn by historical personalities including Queen Victoria and famous modern day celebrities such as Emma Watson and Cindy Crawford have formed a part of the display.
Curated by Edwina Ehrman, the Sydney exhibit will run through July 12, 2015. (PB)
