Fred Stocco, director of GIA Italy, which has been located in Vicenza for the past 12 years, said the Institute decided to move the school to Florence to be near one of the world's most famous arts and cultural centers. The school is near the Ponte Vecchio, or "old bridge," which has been busy with shoppers since before the Renaissance. Jewelry is a Florentine specialty, and the bridge is lined with gold and silver shops – a tradition that goes back centuries.

“GIA Florence will have a unique opportunity to create synergies between the gem and jewelry industry and the Florence fashion industry,” Stocco said. “With many famous jewelry brands in Florence, the Institute will help to service the education needs of the luxury products sector and enhance career opportunities for our graduates there.”

Ellis said students will have plenty of diverse advantages at the new Florence location. “With expanded classrooms, a new student lounge, and its prime location, GIA Florence will be an ideal venue for students from all nations to learn gemology and jewelry design,” he said. “Students can also network and connect with important jewelry firms and leading designers, all near the new school,” he said.

GIA's groundbreaking scientific research has been covered for more than 65 years by its award winning quarterly journal, Gems & Gemology. The Institute's history of education, research, laboratory services, and instrument development reads much like a chrol,” he said.
