Caribbean Institute of Fashion and Design (CIFD) called a press conference at Ministry of Information Conference Centre, Port of Spain, last Tuesday, and addressed the general problems facing fashion industry.

CIFD, the proposed unit of University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), has Advisory Council Board comprised of celebrated fashion designers like Peter Elias, Meiling Esau, and Claudia Pegus.

Scott Hilton-Clarke, Chairman, CIFD Board, opened the conference and invited Adviser to the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Terrence Walker, to present his opinions.

Walker was positive about the growth of fashion and believed that the Government will provide encouraging roadmap and progress oriented policies.

Christopher Nathan, Council Member, hoped that CIFD could breakthrough traditional convictions of career in fashion and mold tentative students into high-class and elite designers.

He urged the Trinidad and Tobago's Fashion Week committee to collaborate with CIFD so as to provide students with a platform to exhibit their creations.

Nathan further said that easier access to high quality fabrics and other materials was crucial for development and recommended the setting up high-end stores that will supply specifically to fashion manufacturers.

The occasion also included a short display of fashion collections by designer Ecliff Elie.

CIFD is expected to start operations by September 2008.
