Clothing cataloger Talbots retail store sales up 11% in Q2

Nation's leading clothing e-tailer The Talbots Inc announced results for the second quarter ended July 30, 2005. Net income in the second quarter was $18.9 million compared to $19.4 million last year. Last year's net income included a $3.4 million tax benefit or $0.06 per share. Excluding the tax benefit, last year's net income was $16.0 million.
Earnings per share were $0.35 this year versus $0.34 last year, a 3 percent increase. Excluding the tax benefit, last year's earnings per share were $0.28 compared to $0.35 this year, reflecting a 25 percent increase.
Total Company net sales increased 12 percent to $449.6 million from $401.5 million last year. Retail store sales were $388.8 million, an 11 percent increase over the $349.0 million reported in the second quarter last year. Included in retail sales was an increase of 6.7 percent in comparable store sales. Direct marketing sales, which include catalog and Internet, increased 16 percent to $60.8 million versus $52.5 million for the fiscal quarter last year.
For the six-month period, net income was $53.4 million versus $52.8 million last year. Last year's net income included a $3.4 million tax benefit or $0.06 per share. Excluding the tax benefit, last year's net income was $49.4 million. Earnings per share were $0.98 this year versus $0.92 last year, a 7 percent increase. Excluding the tax benefit, last year's earnings per share were $0.86 compared to the $0.98 this year, reflecting a 14 percent increase.
