Broad line of performance-oriented athletic shoes seller Saucony Inc announced that Saucony sponsored triathlete Michael Simpson won the first major triathlon of his pro career at the 6th Annual City of Los Angeles Triathlon held September 11, 2005.
Canada's Simpson, 22, clocked a 1:51:33.9 to win the three-sport Olympic distance endurance race comprised of a 0.9-mile ocean swim off Venice Beach, a 24.8-mile bike course through Hollywood, and a 6.2-mile run ending near the Staples Center.
Simpson, whose background is cycling, exited the ocean in 11th place and quickly moved into third place in the bike segment. He took the lead in the first mile of the run, holding it to the finish to win by nearly a minute over Australian Richie Cunningham.
Simpson, who turned pro three years ago, has been racing triathlons for four years. He has been a Team Saucony member for three years. Simpson competes in the Saucony Grid Fastwitch.
