Monaco Classic Week – The J Class

The Yacht Club de Monaco had invited yesterday the veterans of the America's Cup dating from the 30th's, the « J » Class, to replay their “Challenge”.
Brilliant sunshine and light wind were present during this open air theatre displaying sailing cathedrals that magnificently represent the « J » Class. The legend was taking place in the open sea off the Yacht Club de Monaco, with Rangers, former winner of the America's Cup, Velsheda, ShamrockV who used to belong to Thomas Lipton and Cambria, well prepared to beat the challenge.
The outstanding pannel was completed by two 23M JI Cambria and Astra, which have not sailed together on the same waters since 1930. Rare and Emotional reunion for these vessels displaying their 700 square metres of sails.
Two departures were necessary from the buoy of Hublot, Official Chronometer of the Classic Week, to join present forces for an around a 6 nautical miles race sailing from Monaco to Cap-Ferrat.
The velocity of Cambria allowed her to take a departure worthy of the America's Cup but the power of Velsheda put everyone back to its place. Emotion was at its peak on the Monaco Yacht Club waters to display these vessels close to 40 metres to pump energy from any slightest wind.
The show was not missed by the Riva's who came in great number to pay homage to these vessels of exception, of the greatest sailing history, combining performance and preservation of the nautical patrimony, which will participate the regularity competitions and from which winner will also be awarded by Hublot with a splendid SuperB chronograph.
