EMG inks with Kopin to bring lightweight personal video eyewear

Microdisplays producer Kopin Corp announced that Taiwan-based Excellent Media Group (EMG) Co has incorporated Kopin's BDM-230K binocular video subsystem into the i-Theatre(TM) system, which EMG believes is the world's most lightweight mobile video eyewear. EMG has just started shipping i-Theatre products to customers worldwide, including Conrad, one of the largest on-line electronic retailers in Europe.

Weighing just 2.4 ounces (1.5 times the weight of iPod nano), the i-Theater mobile system features a stylish, ergonomically comfortable and lightweight design with long battery life (up to eight hours with 2 AA batteries). It combines Kopin's binocular display module (BDM) with surround-sound stereo, video adapters and battery pack to create a large image equivalent to a 35-inch image as viewed from seven feet away.

The large vivid color images in such a small package makes it ideal for consumers to privately view theatre-quality video, photos and Web sites from small mobile devices such as cell phones, photo iPods, portable DVD players, and personal multimedia players (PMP).

EMG's CEO Joseph Huang informed that Kopin's BDM-230K integrates all the video functions for eyewear into one lightweight, rugged, low-power, plug-and-play module. It enabled EMG to design a new cutting-edge eyewear product at a low cost and in a short period.

Kopin's BDM-230K is a complete video subsystem that delivers crisp, full-color, QVGA-quality (320 x 240 resolution) video. It integrates all the necessary electronics and optics for video eyewear in a lightweight (less than 1 oz, 2/3 the weight of iPod nano), compact package (97.5 mm x 23.75 mm x 22.0 mm). The BDM-230K includes two CyberDisplay 230K displays, backlights, drive electronics, and a pair of 24-degree field-of-view optics with large eye relief (20 mm) and pupil size (10 mm).
