Materials at WSA announces “Sustainability: Collective Visions,” the newest addition to its already extensive educational workshop program taking place July 28-30, 2008.

Presented by sustainable fashion expert Lynda Grose, this workshop will provide invaluable insight into successful sustainable design strategies within the fashion marketplace that can be applied to any industry.

Grose has been actively engaged in the fashion industry for 25 years, working with clients ranging from The Sustainable Cotton Project, Aid to Artisans, Gap Inc, Patagonia, Green Peace, 13-mile Farm, and Shayan Craft center.

Grose has also developed curricula for sustainable fashion design at Academy of Art University and California College of the Arts, in San Francisco, where she is currently the senior adjunct professor.

“The fashion industry has always pursued sustainability primarily through organic fabrics and alternative materials, which can be substituted within current business models,” said Grose.

“However, now the tides are turning and the understanding of sustainability is evolving to extend to the full lifecycle, including consumer use and patterns of consumption.

This presentation will highlight emerging examples in fashion that provoke reflection, and will provide insight into how alternative business models will affect the footwear industry.”

In addition, attendees will take away three tools to help capture trends, eco strategies and impacts: Eco strategy wheel, ecology of a product tool and cultural mapping tool.

In addition to “Sustainability: Collective Visions,” Materials at WSA will also host a two-part color trend preview workshop presented by color forecasting leader Pantone on July 28 and 29, as well as “The Future of Footwear Manufacturing in China” on July 28, which will provide an overview of the economic and political trends within China and U.S. relations, and “Translating New Materials into Function,” which will introduce new materials, and demonstrate the innovative ways to use them.

A focal point at the show will be its cutting-edge trend forecast area, which will reflect the direction of the new season by showcasing innovative materials from exhibiting suppliers.
