An exquisite display of quilts by Diane Getty under the banner 'Collage in Fabric and Thread' has been put up for display for the entire month in the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library on Atlantic Avenue.

A large crowd gathered for an opening reception that was held on September 6, followed by a quilting demonstration on September 7.

Getty has been known for her dynamism in creating masterpieces and has always collected and treasured fabrics, fibers and various other randomly found objects. She declared her love for fabrics and seemed enthralled by the fact that they offer an almost unlimited range of color with an added advantage of textures, patterns and images.

The very thought that fabrics could be cut, frayed, slashed, drawn, painted, stitched, printed upon, and embellished with beads and small objects, gave enough reasons for Getty to use the same generously in her work.

The work on display highlighted Getty's definition of a fabric collage which evidently came up in form of quilting, but she affirmed that there are no set rules or patterns followed. Her extraordinary talent is revealed from the enormous efforts she undertakes. Getty not only paints fabrics but also uses purchased materials, stitches free hand on machines, embroiders by hand before finally, a spectacular quilt is produced.

So intricate and awe-inspiring are her works that some of those who visited the expo could not believe it was done single-handedly. Every inch of her work evinces uniqueness which was made possible by her ability to recreate her experiences and reactions and put them onto work. Her work experiments with materials and concepts and mirrors various expressions of joy, wonder, sadness and confusion faced in the everyday life.

Getty labors with both natural images and abstract symbols; studying plants and landscapes and interpreting them in fiber through painting, collage and stitching. The Element series, one of her most appreciated works involved using printed fabrics and stitching to represent ancient symbols in contemporary terms. Besides, Getty has also explored her ability to present work themed on games, politics and humorous aspects of life expressed in such works as 'The Modern Saint Series'.
