If anyone knows how time and an active lifestyle can impact a person's body and skin, it's a plastic surgeon. Nearly 11.7 million Americans turned to cosmetic procedures last year to improve their appearances.

However, New York City-based plastic surgeon Shirley Madhere, M.D, says you can improve your appearance, without going under the knife!

"As you age, your skin naturally becomes thinner and loses its elasticity," says Dr. Madhere. "Since your skin does not produce as many natural oils as it once did, it also becomes a bit drier. All of these factors make your skin more prone to sagging and to wrinkles."

Dr. Madhere offers these tips for looking great at any age:
1. Avoid prolonged sun exposure: "I can't tell you how many procedures I have performed that could have been delayed if the client had taken precautions to protect his or her skin from the sun," says Dr. Madhere, who recommends a daily sunscreen with SPF 30 or greater. "Opt for sunless tanners and bronzers if you desire a sun-kissed look."

2. Work from the inside out: "What you put into your body is reflected on the outside," she says. A known aging culprit is cigarette smoking, which saps skin of Vitamin A and may give it a sallow hue.

"Quitting smoking will add years to your life and will also help prevent some lines and wrinkles from forming." Dr. Madhere also recommends eating fresh fruits and vegetables, which are high in antioxidants. A supervised detox plan will help eliminate toxins and clear up skin.

Dr. Madhere advises keeping your body well hydrated and to consider taking a multivitamin to compensate for nutrients you may be missing in your daily diet.

3. Reduce bruise discoloration and swelling: For those who do rely on their plastic surgeon, Dr. Madhere says homeopathic Arnica montana works on bruising and swelling after cosmetic or surgical procedures. She recommends Boiron's Arnicare Gel and Arnica montana oral pellets.

"Arnicare is a must for anyone who wants to have less downtime after a procedure or maintain an active lifestyle but not the effects of it on their skin.

It reduces bruise discoloration, which can be unsightly on exposed areas like legs and arms. Arnicare treats everyday muscle aches and pain from overexertion or minor injuries, so keep it handy in your purse, briefcase or gym bag."

4. Rest and recharge: "Nothing ages your skin more than stress," says Dr. Madhere. She recommends activities that help beat stress and keep you calm, such as yoga, exercising, meditation and creative writing. And don't skimp on sleep aim for 7 to 8 hours a night.

"Keeping your skin healthy and young looking is simple if you are willing to incorporate some natural changes into your routine and make an investment in your lifestyle," says Dr. Madhere.
