Seduction (from December 9, 2008 through June 16, 2009) will be the first chronological exploration of the role of sexuality in fashion. The exhibition will feature over seventy looks from the mid-eighteenth century to the present, using objects from the Museum's permanent collection.

Seductive dress has been worn throughout history by both men and women to enhance physical attractiveness, and to convey a sense of power and social status. Clothing's proximity to the body creates an inherent sensuality, conveyed through a careful interplay of exposure and concealment.

The complex relationship between seduction and dress will present visitors with a history of fashion as well as that of sexuality, moral standards, and social norms. The exhibition will include a wide range of seductive fashion, from the most subtle flirtations of the Victorian era to the explicitly sexy work of designers such as Jean-Paul Gaultier and Azzedine Alaïa.

Contemporary looks from Costume National, Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein, and Peter Som will also be featured. By the 1980s, attitudes towards the display of women's bodies had shifted dramatically as female sexuality was increasingly considered a sign of strength.
