The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) has established a Bachelor of Science degree program in Technical Design, with classes starting in fall 2009. The program was developed in response to the increased demand for qualified professionals in this rapidly growing field, which utilizes technical design as an aid to patternmaking.

Technical designers define garment development from concept through shipping by virtually communicating and tracking fit, construction, quality, and measurement specifications. This is the first program of its kind in the New York City area, and in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, of which FIT is a part.

"The Technical Design BS degree will give students the opportunity to participate in an interdisciplinary program that will nurture their creative abilities, provide technical training, and develop their business skills," said Robin Sackin, Acting Dean of the Jay and Patty Baker School of Business and Technology.

"It will prepare them to become technical designers in design, manufacturing, and retail companies; fit engineers; specifications technicians; or technical assistants to product developers."

Candidates for the BS degree in Technical Design pursue a two-year, 25-course, 66.5-credit program. This degree builds on the Fashion Design AAS degree. Courses include Production Patternmaking Development for woven and stretch fabrics; Computerized Pattern Development; Manufacturing Process Analysis; Computerized Grading, Marking, and Specs; Production and Technical Design; Computerized Pattern and Fit Corrections; and Merchandising for Technical Design. The final semester of the course incorporates an internship, providing students with hands-on workplace experience before graduation.

An information session on the BS degree in Technical Design will be held on Thursday, November 20th at 5 pm in the Robert Lagary Board Room of the Marvin Feldman Center (C building), ninth floor.
