A group of 26 young learners from Northampton have used their new music and dance skills to raise the roof at the Northampton Afro Caribbean Centre with their first fashion show.

The young people, aged 13 to 25, have acquired a range of performing arts skills with the help of Dreamz2Reality and The University of Northampton.

Dreamz2Reality (D2R) is a community based project working with young people from Northampton. Since September 2008, D2R has been based at The University of Northampton's Avenue Campus.

Lee Jones, Assistant Director of the University's Office of Educational Partnerships and Lifelong Learning, commented:

''We are delighted to have D2R working in our office to enable young people to have the opportunity to explore our campus and what the University offers. The fashion show was an exciting example of the new skills young people can acquire to create and enjoy new experiences.''

The variety of skills the young people put to work included choreography, music production, lighting, make-up, stage management, front of house, clothes design and styling and events management. The dress rehearsal for the show took place at the University's Avenue Campus.

Ben Joseph (19), a male model in the fashion show, said:

''I had a great time at the show and acquired so many new skills. This has been a great opportunity for young people''.

Zara Neil (18), a female model, commented:

''I did not know so much went into a fashion show. I have learnt so much more about fashion, marketing and organising, thanks to this opportunity''.

Patrick Johnson, Project Manager for Dreamz2Reality, commented:

''The fashion show has brought both secondary school and University of Northampton students together from diverse backgrounds to work towards a shared goal.

''The show would not have gone ahead without the continuing support of the Northampton Community Foundation and the University. Our partnership with the University offers some real opportunities to progress our music, media and fashion projects with our eclectic mix of young people''.

The University of Northampton is dedicated to high quality higher education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, through taught courses and research. As Northamptonshire's only dedicated higher education institution, it is committed to the transfer of knowledge and technology to the community and aims to contribute to the cultural development of the region.
