Pearl Academy of Fashion (PAF), India's premier design institute hosted 'Retail Art', a visual merchandising competition for the students of Communication Design & Fashion Retail Management programme. The competition was part of an innovative module called Applied VM, headed by Ms. Charneeta Kaur, which aims at giving the students a practical approach to visual merchandising.

Fourty students participated and were given a chance to express their creativity. The live competition was a test of not only creativity but also technical know-how as well as hands-on approach to window dressing. The competitive environment helped students develop their theoretical skills in a practical environment and gain confidence as well as a deeper understanding of their work.

Retail Art competition invited students to submit mood boards supported with write-ups. This gave the concept and ideation behind the window display. An expert jury selected the top 10 proposals to go through to the final stage of the competition.

It was a real adventure for those involved going head to head with their peers in the spirit of the competition. Judges for the occasion, Mr. Tejinder Pal Singh, Visual Merchandiser of Pantaloon India Retail, and Ms. Gunjan Kocchar, eminent freelance visual merchandiser, and alumni of Pearl Academy, had a tough time in deciding the winners. After lot of discussion between the jury members, students of 6th semester undergraduate batch of Fashion Retail management were declared the final winners followed by 2nd semester students of PG Batch being the runner ups.

With the tremendous growth of the apparel industry domestically and overseas, current industry trends clearly indicate a huge requirement of professionally trained merchandisers. Keeping this mind Retail Art was organized to provide an exposure that generates a rationality and pragmatism and encourages the students to go beyond the classroom learning.

Speaking on the occassion, Dr. A. K. G. Nair, Group Director, Pearl Academy of Fashion said, “Pearl Academy of Fashion strongly believes in instilling creativity through experiential learning. It is essential for students to develop specialized domain knowledge and business strategizing expertise. A multi- faceted development of relevant skills and concept can be achieved through institutional activities and events like this as they provide the platform to the students to showcase their creativity and talent. PAF will continue to host such events from time to time.”
