'Placement Linked Skill Development Programme' going on in full swing

FDDI in association with Department for Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) has launched 'Placement Linked Skill Development Programme' (PLSDP) under the XIth Five Year Plan of the Government of India.

The programme targets to resolve one the major problems of the Indian leather and footwear industry i.e. the shortage of trained manpower at the operator level.

According to Mr. Rajeev Lakhara, IRS, Managing Director, FDDI, “Recognizing the potential of the Indian Leather Sector, the Centre has identified the industry as "focus sector" for generating employment and fostering further growth that can only be achieved with trained manpower.”

“Hence, the PLSDP is the best alternate to produce trained manpower for the industry readily employable,” added Mr. Lakhara.

FDDI is implementing the PLSDP through establishment of training centers at Kanpur, Agra and at various on-site locations.

Objective of the Training Programme:
• To train unemployed youths of the society;
• To cover leather & footwear products manufacturing clusters;
• To provide gainful employment to the qualified youths.

At these centers, unemployed youths are being selected, trained and provided assistance to get employment in the footwear industry at the shop floor level operations.

Initially, basic courses in cutting and closing operations are being carried out. The training for specific requirements of other skills of footwear manufacturing is being conducted at the factory premises.

A total number of 622 trainees have undergone training or are being trained at FDDI's centers in Agra and Kanpur and at various on-site training centers.

M/s TATA International Limited and M/s Zermatt Shoe Company Pvt. Ltd. have already recruited the successful candidates on various shop floor level functions as per their skill set.

According to Mr. Shashi Bhushan Shukla, IRS, Secretary, FDDI, “For providing the training in the designated courses, various training modules have been designed by the technical experts and senior faculties of FDDI who also supervise the PLSDP.”

The curriculum and the subject matter has been developed keeping in mind the general skill and technical requirements of worker on the shop floor in a most lucid and easily understandable manner.

The training programs have been highly appreciated by the respective industries.
