Carrera presents its Basel 2009 collection - 'azucar'

Carrera Y Carrera, the world renowned Spanish jewellery house presents its much awaited Baselworld 2009 launch – the Azucar collection, drawing upon the historic and cultural ties between Cuba and Spain.
The 'return to roots' venture marks the first foray of the group into the Hispanic world outside Spain and unveils two lines – Gardenia, inspired by the Gardenia flower and Mosaico inspired by the mosaic floors of Cuba. Azucar, which means 'sugar' in Spanish, also symbolizes excitement, passion and temptation and is a highly emotive collection. Steeped in nostalgia and pride it offers a sensual array of glamorous pendant chains, necklaces, earrings and rings crafted in yellow and white gold that sparkle with diamonds, glow with lustrous pearls and are highlighted by onyx and deep red enamel.
Commenting on the new collection, Mrs. Nathalie Guedj, Carrera y Carrera CEO said, “We have always sought inspiration from Spanish culture and this time we have gone beyond the borders of Spain to Cuba, its flowers and its sensuality. Gorgeous Gardenia!
Gardenia pays charming tribute to the beauty of the evergreen white and cream colour flowers by the same name which blossom generally in mid spring/early summer, which has glossy dark green leaves. Its sweet and powerful fragrance can perfume an entire garden and the flower is often used by women to adorn their hair. An aspect that is vividly captured in its attractive rings, where a diamond paved orb, pearl or black onyx is adorned by a lavish and lifelike gardenia blossom.
In its gorgeous drop earrings on the other hand the design house places single blooms on sumptuous South Sea pearls and dangles them on gold 'stems' held in place by tiny knots. This design is thereafter transformed effortlessly into its highly exotic Maxi Gardenia necklace featuring a large gardenia blossom with a rose cut diamond in its heart that is alternatively offered with its petals 'painted' over with red enamel.
Geometric Mosaico
The Mosaico collection on the other hand draws inspiration from an interesting fact in Spain's history: Spaniards returning to their motherland, after half a lifetime spent in Cuba, would often decorate their homes in Spain with mosaic designs from Cuba. Highly texturised and geometric Mosaico offers riveting necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings in white and yellow gold settings, dazzling with diamond brilliants. Its defining element is its highly structured border and a fabric made up of 'threads' of round and square cut diamonds.
The design house then 'cuts' out necklaces to closely grace one's neck, clasp one's wrist as a bracelet or as a ring and fall away enticingly from one's ear lobes as a pair of long earrings.
