Krishna's Sadhu Baba to herald a dramatic collection

For the first time in the history of Indian fashion, a show was opened by a floor length dread locked, conch blowing, Sadhu Baba to herald a dramatic collection. Dressing the Indian male is an art for Krishna Mehta and for Spring/Summer 2010 her kaleidoscopic ethnic collection at Lakme Fashion Week was a lineup of garments that carried forth the timeless appeal that she is so famous for.

Inspired by the beauty and colour of the Kumbh Mela, the collection titled “Fantasies of Indian Magic” was a spiritual fashion odyssey with garments that were as fresh as the summer breeze and light as air. Men's ensembles were a riot of colours and a perfect blend of textures but with that element of contemporary punk for shorter slimmer silhouettes.

To the strains of chanting OM, by the Bikramjit Singh band, models dressed as sadhu and sadhavi draped in rows of rudraksh beads started the grand line up of creations in luxurious fabrics like lame, silk, and linen in shades of wine and gold. Throughout the show, Krishna remained very firm in her colour story and did not divert from the earthy path and the fabrics and embellishments revealed a strong feel for craftsmanship.

The prints, dyes and colours wove a fashionable symphony with subtle detailing. Women's wear made a brief appearance to balance the style directions of the collection. Waist coats, unlined sherwanis, jacquard weave coats, crushed machined kurtas, shimmering tissue tunics; relaxed kurtas were finely balanced with very heavy glittering sherwanis and textured long jackets. The almost abstract fabric design was nearly tonal, with hints of glitz. All the garments were uniformly teamed with elasticized waist pyjamas or cropped pants – at times with interesting embellished hems.

Here were garments with a soul and Krishna Mehta proved that her collection for the next season will have that subtle stylish touch that her loyal clientele wants.
