Liz Findlay was pleased with the high number and quality of entries for this year's scholarship and is confident that the future of New Zealand's fashion industry is in capable hands.

“The designers that entered this year's scholarship were very impressive. They each showed a mixture of creativity, ingenuity and business savvy that is vital when taking on international markets – not to mention enthusiasm and proven success.”

The finalists for the 2009 DHL Express Fashion Export Scholarship included Lonely Hearts, Salasai and Twenty Seven Names.

DHL is committed to its partnership with the fashion industry in New Zealand and recognises it as an important export sector. DHL provides extensive express services to New Zealand's leading designers including products tailored specifically to the apparel industry and the requirements of this dynamic market.

The DHL Fashion Export Scholarship presents an invaluable opportunity for emerging fashion exporters to help grow their businesses internationally and DHL looks forward to continuing this support in the future.

The judges measured the three finalists on their ability to sustain and expand export growth. They considered their total revenue in sales both in New Zealand and export dollars, and their ability to fund more export sales. They overviewed their existing export accounts and the potential to gain new accounts in other markets.

They measured their design based on creative and individual design handwriting; a definite point of difference that showed it was unique, commercially relevant and would appeal to an international buyer. They viewed look books and PR material and considered all the PR and editorial achieved so far.

The scholarship is designed to identify New Zealand's hottest up-and-coming fashion exporter and assist them in achieving international growth. It is open to New Zealand fashion designers who have been exporting for less than four years.

The winner of the scholarship will receive international freight to the value of NZ$10,000 and coaching in freight and logistics from DHL Express; as well as a tailored export mentoring package from Fashion Industry New Zealand (FINZ) and an annual FINZ membership.

Entrants were invited to complete an official application and submit a design portfolio, which was judged by fashion industry leaders.

The judges were: Liz Findlay of Zambesi, one of New Zealand's most respected fashion designers; Fiona Hawtin, editor of Fashion Quarterly; Sarah Gibbs, founder and co-director of natural beauty product company Trilogy; Mapihi Opai, Executive Officer of Fashion Industry New Zealand (FINZ); and Jason Orlop, Fashion and Textile Strategic Account Manager of DHL Express New Zealand.

“The DHL Express Fashion Export Scholarship enables DHL to continue to support the fashion industry. It is an important sector in New Zealand's export market and we are excited tobe working with designers to help them realise their exporting potential," says Jason Orlop.
