Copenhagen Fashion Week - signs of optimism

Another Copenhagen Fashion Week is coming to an end - but both at CIFF and Gallery there are signs of optimism despite a fall in visitor numbers relative to August last year

The summer version of Copenhagen's fashion week is drawing to a close, and both at CIFF in Bella Center and at Gallery in Forum Copenhagen, there is a sense of budding optimism despite falls in visitor numbers.

This time, 24,371 people visited CIFF, which constitutes a decline of 14.5 per cent compared to August last year. Gallery had 10,809 visitors during the four fair days, representing a 4 per cent decline relative to August 2008.

The budding signs of optimism could for example be noticed at the CIFF TREND SHOW, where the design agency Femmes Regionales had created a richly coloured show with balloons, flowers and lots of smiling models.

Moreover, several exhibitors reported they had a positive fair, even though the industry as a whole is in crisis. Henriette Plejdrup from the MONTA brand, which was exhibiting for the first time at the fashion fair, says:

"There was considerable interest from buyers. Even the 'little' consumers - the children - have been enthusiastic about the brand and asked when it's going on sale in the shops."

Many children visited the MONTA stand when the Dutch football star Edgar Davis dropped into CIFFFKIDS to sign footballs. He is one of the entrepreneurs behind the Dutch firm.

Mio my Mio, which has been at CIFF for several seasons, also had a positive experience:

"We have seen new customers every day. And a lot of interest has been shown by foreign buyers from, for example, Norway, the Netherlands and Sweden. Our expectations for the fair have definitely been fulfilled," says Henriette Sonne from Mio my Mio.

The optimistic mood at both fairs ties in well with a survey conducted by the trade organisation Danish Fashion and Textile among its 340 member companies. The conclusion is that most of the companies have adapted their business routines as a result of the economic recession, and are therefore looking forward to better times in early 2010.

The next CIFF and Gallery will be held on 11 - 14 February 2010.
