Extension of Gucci & Martin Scorsese Film Foundation deal

Gucci is pleased to announce that it is extending its commitment to preserving the artistic and cultural heritage of landmark cinema through a further donation of US $900,000 to Martin Scorsese's Film Foundation for film restoration including two classics of Italian cinema: Il Gattopardo (1963) and La Dolce Vita (1960). To date, Gucci has donated a total of $1.5 million to The Film Foundation in its restoration of six iconic film titles.
The new 4K digital restoration of director Luchino Visconti's, Il Gattopardo (The Leopard) will have its world premiere at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival on May 14, 2010. Il Gattopardo originally premiered to critical acclaim in Cannes in 1963, winning the festival's top honor, the Palme d'Or.
With Gucci's support, the film has undergone an extensive 4K digital restoration at Sony's Colorworks Digital Facility through a partnership of Cineteca di Bologna, L'Immagine Ritrovata, The Film Foundation, Pathé, Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé, Twentieth Century Fox, and Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia-Cineteca Nazionale. Martin Scorsese, Founder and Chair of The Film Foundation, will introduce the film at the world premiere in Cannes. The following evening Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini together with Vanity Fair Editor Graydon Carter will host an exclusive dinner at the Hotel du Cap, followed by a party in honor of Mr. Scorsese and the 20th anniversary of The Film Foundation.
Gucci is also working with The Film Foundation to digitally restore Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita (1960), which is a fitting celebration for the 50th anniversary of this Italian cinema classic.
Commenting on The Film Foundation's longstanding partnership with Gucci, Martin Scorsese said, "Gucci deserves our deepest gratitude for its ongoing commitment to the restoration of works like Il Gattopardo and La Dolce Vita. Visconti and Fellini are filmmakers whose impact on cinema has been enormous, and both these films are as powerful today as when they were first released."
Gucci's Creative Director Frida Giannini said, "Gucci has a long history with film dating back to the late 1940's, and we are proud to support the work of Martin Scorsese and The Film Foundation to keep these vibrant, timeless films alive. Through preservation, the legacy of visionary filmmakers like Luchino Visconti and Federico Fellini can continue to inspire us, as well as future generations."
Through its multi-year partnership with The Film Foundation, Gucci celebrates its own near 90 year history which has been strongly influenced by cinema. The collection of iconic films, under the banner “Cinema Visionaries,” restored to date by Gucci and The Film Foundation includes:
- In 2006- A Woman Under The Influence (1974, d. John Cassavetes)
- In 2007- Le Amiche (1955, d. Michelangelo Antonioni)
- In 2008- Wanda (1970, d. Barbara Loden)
- In 2009- Senso (1950, d. Luchino Visconti)
