"There are just eight couturiers in Paris and 19 in India" jested Sunil Sethi, President of Fashion Design Council of India, at a press conference to announce the Pearl Delhi Couture Week, starting July 20. The five day extravaganza will be held at The Grand Hotel in Vasant Kunj.

This is the first time FDCI has initiated a couture week in Delhi. For the past two years FDCI had organised HDIL Couture week in Mumbai. Participating in this important milestone for the fashion industry are 13 leading designers - Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, Anamika Khanna, AZA presents Manish Malhotra, Gaurav Gupta, JJ Valaya, Manav Gangwani, Pallavi Jaikishan, Raakesh Agarvwal, Rina Dhaka, Rohit Bal, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Suneet Varma and Varun Bahl, who will showcase their collections on the ramp.

The six designers who will showcase installations are - Ekru by Ekta and Ruchira, Geisha designs by Paras and Shalini, Jaya Rathore, Monapali, Reynu Taandon and Satya Paul.

There will be two shows per day and an off-site show, for which the location will be disclosed shortly. Emphasising that July is the best time to have a couture week, Sethi said, "In North India, the best time to sell clothes is October, winters and the festive months, and July is the time when designers are ready with their couture collection and to take orders." After all, couture is made to order for a specific customer.

Designer Puneet Nanda from Satya Paul who was quite miffed with FDCI, as his show was cancelled during the WIFW, is back with FDCI. Sethi said, "It was Satya Paul's 25th anniversary and his guests had to return so Puneet was hurt. But he knows it was circumstantial. We are good friends."

So what can we expect from the couture week? Designer Rohit Bal who has been part of the Mumbai couture week replied, "It will be a different way of looking at fashion. Couture is very specialised and high quality. It will be the best possible way to make a garment, involving detailing and handwork. Clothes will be topmost in quality and will touch perfection in fashion."

Designer JJ Valaya added, "In other fashion weeks, one sees ready-to-wear. It will be different and grander here."

The fashion week is backed by title sponsor Pearls Group, and partners like Signature brand from United Spirits and P7. Sethi informed that talks are going on with other sponsors.
