An international student from De Montfort University (DMU) has been shortlisted for the final of the Young Designer of the Year 2010 competition at one of the UK's most prestigious fashion events.

Maria Flora Ellina, from Limassol, Cyprus, is one of ten finalists whose designs will be showcased on the catwalk at the Clothes Show Live at NEC in Birmingham on Monday 6 December.

The competition promotes emerging talent and is open to fashion students from universities and colleges around the UK. The winner receives £1,000 prize money, one weeks work experience with a top fashion designer and a £1,000 donation to their university.
DMU has regularly had students shortlisted for the annual competition and in 2008 DMU student Charlotte Christy was named Young Designer of the Year.

The brief for this year's competition was to design a dress that draws inspiration from any country in the world.

Maria, who studies the BA (Hons) Fashion Design course at DMU in Leicester, UK, chose a Moroccan theme for her dress. She has combined architectural digital prints and traditional knitted techniques on silk fabric to show Moroccan energy, colour and shape.

The 21-year-old said: “My design is offering an escape route to another world and giving the wearer a journey to my own state of mind. Making the Clothes Show Live has been a satisfying experience as all my efforts, hard work and trials have paid off, I am very pleased.”

“Being a student here in England has been a very elevating footstep for me. I see England as a very inspiring country that offers and opens a lot of doors for a career. The fact that you can pop into galleries, buy your fabrics and materials from traditional graphic stores in London, makes my fashion come alive.”

Della Swain, Fashion Design Course Leader, said: “We are extremely pleased to be selected once again to be part of this national competition where hundreds of students enter from around the UK. Having Maria selected for the final ten on the catwalk is really great news.”
