For City Chic, Melbourne's March 2011 fashion week was a memorable seven days. The company hosted its own runway show at the L'Oreal Fashion Festival, making it the first plus size brand to be scheduled in a major international fashion event.

Two world-renowned plus size models lead the show: Laura Wells, who is based in New York with the Wilhelmina agency, and Bree Warren, who has walked in fashion shows for designer Elana Miro.

Also on the runway were Lola Parker and Sommer Green, two young Americans who won a competition with City Chic to fly to Australia and be in the show. The pair recently wrote a blog post about their week for The Curvy Fashionista.

“Sommer and I were the first African Americans walking for City Chic,” Lola wrote in the post. “What a huge opportunity!”

Phil Ryan, the international president of City Chic, said it was great to have such a strong U.S. connection on the runway.

“Plus fashion is global and City Chic is taking the lead,” he said. “Having Laura and Bree as professional models from the U.S.A., with Lola and Sommer joining them, gave the show a real U.S. feel. The feedback from the U.S. plus consumer has been amazing so far. They love our fashions!”

City Chic has 80 retail stores in Australia and in November launched a U.S. site with free shipping and free returns directly from the U.S.A.
