Brazilian denim giant Vicunha Textil and denim guru Adriano Goldschmied have come together to work for a sustainability project to reduce water consumption in the production of denim. The new eco range of denim fabric ‘Absolut Eco’ for spring/summer 2020 saves up to 95 per cent water and up to 90 per cent chemicals during its production process.

“As it is made of recycled pre-consumer denim, additional dyeing is not necessary. The special character of the fabric is down to the indigo of the original material, which is shredded and turned into a new fabric. With its authentic and unique appearance, Absolut Eco offers an innovative alternative to reusing denim waste without the need for further dyeing,” Vicunha said in a press release.

Items from the Absolut Eco line are barely washed or not washed at all. They can be used directly for ready-to-wear, without any other chemicals having to be used.

Absolut Eco includes two items made of 100 per cent cotton: ‘Pine’ with 11 oz and ‘Morus’ with 11.3 oz, which guarantee the authentic denim look. And also ‘Agar’, a cotton-elastane item with a stretch of 30 per cent for added comfort and flexibility in 10.3 oz.

With 50 years of experience under its belt, Vicunha is not only the leading player in the South  American market but is also setting international benchmarks as a high-volume producer with an output of more than 20 million metres of fabric per month.

In the past 40 years of his career, Goldschmied—also known as the ‘Godfather of Denim’, has played a pivotal role in making denim such a fashionable must-have. He established Diesel, helped to develop Replay, Goldie, Evisu and Rivet, founded ‘A Gold E’, ‘AG Adriano Goldschmied’, ‘Goldsign’ and in 2016 ‘A Cynetic’, an ‘indigo athlethic’ brand that merges denim with performance wear.
