During the first two months of this year, apparel imports from China contributed 64.78 per cent to New Zealand’s total apparel imports of $231.487 million. In comparison, the share was 63.30 per cent out of total apparel imports of $233.001 million in January–February 2024, according to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro.
Jerseys were the most dominant garment imported by New Zealand from China during this period, with imports valued at $29.378 million, representing 19.57 per cent of total apparel imports from China. Imports of trousers and shorts were valued at $24.683 million (16.45 per cent), coats at $15.293 million (10.19 per cent), shirts at $11.540 million (7.69 per cent), and T-shirts at $11.216 million (7.47 per cent).
Imports of man-made fibre apparel from China stood at $63.965 million, accounting for 42.62 per cent of total imports from China. Cotton apparel imports were valued at $52.786 million (35.17 per cent), wool/animal hair at $9.718 million (6.48 per cent), and silk at $0.079 million (0.05 per cent), as per TexPro.
Among the top five apparel suppliers, imports from Bangladesh, the second-largest supplier, were valued at $22.909 million (9.90 per cent) in the first two months of this year. New Zealand’s apparel imports from Vietnam totalled $15.874 million (6.86 per cent), from Indonesia $7.566 million (3.27 per cent), and from India $7.252 million (3.13 per cent) during the same period.
