Unscheduled power cuts affecting jute industry

Frequent and unscheduled power cuts in and around Kolkata since more than 15 days are highly affecting the jute industry, which has led to wide protests from jute trade bodies to regulate electricity supply.

The representative body of the jute mill owners 'The Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA)' has written a letter to Mrinal Banerjee, Minister, Ministry of Power, Sumantra Banerjee, Managing Director of Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation and Malay Kumar De, Chairman & Managing director of West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company.

IJMA has requested for a scheduled implementation electric power cuts, rather than unscheduled cuts which leads to disruption in production. Mr Sanjay Kajaria, Chairman, IJMA, said in the letter that adopting scheduled power cuts would help the sector plan their production lines.

He also warned that, in case the government does not adopt the system, the jute manufacturing sector will go on strike. He also added by saying that, to decrease daily losses, there could be a forced shut-down of jute mills in the state for long as jute mills are using generators during power cuts, which results into four times increase in power cost.
