Karnataka Govt succumbs to local weavers' demands

Submitting to the demands of domestic weavers, the Karnataka Government has decided to make bulk purchase of sarees from north Karnataka for giving out the same to mothers of girls entitled to receive them under the Bhagyalakshmi scheme.

As the Karnataka Government had decided to buy the whole lot of sarees manufactured by weavers of Surat in Gujarat, the weavers' associations in north Karnataka were demanding that the State Government should also purchase the polyester sarees that they weave on powerlooms. The Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation (KHDC) on behalf of weavers presented this demand before the State Government and the Government succumbed to the same.

Out of the total 1.068 million sarees that the government is set to purchase, the domestic weavers would supply as many sarees that they can manufacture, before programme begins. KHDC on behalf of government would procure these sarees and distribute the same to talukas, where it would be distributed amongst women covered under the scheme. Weavers' associations along with people's representatives in Belgaum, Bagalkot, Rabakavi and Gadag have convening meetings with the weavers in the area to check availability of sarees.

A Government Order published by the Department of Women and Child Development on October 15, reads that, sarees manufactured by local weavers would be procured at a rate of Rs. 225 per saree.
