Godavari Biorefineries Ltd, one of India's leading and sustainable biorefinery companies, has earned the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Certified Biobased Product label. The products—NaturoBG® (1,3-Butylene Glycol) and Acetic Acid Glacial—are now able to display a unique USDA label that highlights the percentage of bio-based content.

NaturoBG® is an intermediate product used for the manufacture of polyester plasticisers, production of unsaturated polyester resins and as well as moisturiser and softener in textiles.

Acetic Acid with 100% bio-based content from biobased ethanol adhering to the "Green Chemistry Principles" is colourless liquid used as a raw material in the production of industrial chemicals and solvents. It conforms to COSMOS standards with usage in textile industry particularly towards increasing dye stability on cloth as well as acts as a solubilising agent for water-insoluble basic dyes used on textile printing.

The bio-based products reduce the impact of chemicals used in textile and apparel manufacturing on the environment. Biobased products are cost-comparative, readily available, and perform as well as or better than their conventional counterparts.

"The USDA BioPreferred label demonstrates our commitment to sustainability through providing the textile and apparel industries with bio-based chemicals. It is another milestone in our journey to be the preferred source of sustainable products to our customers worldwide," said Godavari Biorefineries chairman and managing director Samir Somaiya.

"Buyers of textile goods have become sensitive to sustainable sourcing of raw materials during the manufacturing processes. Godavari Biorefineries Limited, works closely with industries around the globe to understand their core challenges and deliver biobased chemicals needed in sustainable supply chain manufacturing processes," Somaiya added.

The BioPreferred Program is a USDA-led initiative that assists the development and expansion of markets for biobased products. The program is transforming the marketplace for biobased products through two initiatives: mandatory purchasing requirements for Federal Agencies and Federal contractors and voluntary product certification and labelling.

Expressed as a percentage, biobased content is the ratio of non-fossil organic carbon (new organic carbon) to total organic carbon in a product. New organic carbon is derived from recently-created materials. The total organic carbon in a product consists of new organic carbon and old organic carbon that originates from fossil carbon materials, such as petroleum, coal, or natural gas. More than 3,000 products have earned the USDA Certified Biobased Product label. (RKS)
