Crystal International launches fully traceable denim

May 21, 2020 - Hong Kong

Crystal International Group recently collaborated with The R Collective, an upcycled fashion brand supported by Levi’s, to launch a fully traceable upcycled denim collection named Denim Reimagined, which aims to reduce waste and climate impact of garments. The project is dedicated to putting back surplus denim into lifecycle to prolong its lifespan.

The collection is designed by designer Jesse Lee and remade by Crystal International’s eco denim factory.

The limited-edition collection features nine upcycled denim pieces that were remade from Levi’s aged inventory and irregular or leftover samples which were unsewn and unstitched. The eco model denim factory of Crystal in China, Zhongshan Yida Apparel Ltd, restitched and resewed the items into new denim pieces, while maintaining the authenticity of the denim products. With the use of digital identity technology powered by Evrything in scannable and water-soluble garment labels, which are provided by Avery Dennison, every piece in this collection is fully traceable.

“Denim Reimagined series unites innovative design, manufacturing and labelling to demonstrate the use for denim excess and reduce fashion’s environmental impact. We look forward to creating more apparel products in a sustainable, eco-friendly way. As a pioneer in the industry, we always strive to work towards our vision of sustainability and drive positive change,” said Miles Lam, assistant general manager of product development department of Crystal International’s eco denim factory.

According to The R Collective and based upon Levi’s lifecycle assessment of a pair of jeans, one pair of jeans, along its entire lifecycle from crop to disposal, generates 33.4kg CO2-e. By finding a second life for the aged inventory and irregular or leftover samples, this project is avoiding the need to create raw materials and reducing fashion’s negative environmental impact.

Crystal International will continuously exert every effort with the industry partners to bring more breakthrough collections that reduce garments’ environmental impact and build consumers’ sustainable wearing habits onto the global fashion stage.
