April 08, 2008 - India

Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) today announced that two of its budding talents, Alpana and Neeraj of Azara and Ashish, Viral & Vikrant of Virtues will showcase their collection at the 10th anniversary of the Miami Fashion Week.

The two Indian labels will be showcased on April 12 under ‘Emerging East Designer’ category. This exchange is facilitated by the Fashion Design Council of India.

Scheduled between April 9-13, 2008, over 70 of the world’s most talented designers in women’s eveningwear and prêt-a-porter, men’s wear, lingerie, swimwear and accessories will rock the city of Miami, as fashion buyers and enthusiasts assemble at the leading international fashion event of the United States.

Azara is the brainchild of the budding duo Alpana and Neeraj. For the first time, Alpana and Neeraj showcased their collection at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW), a few weeks ago, during the Autumn/Winter 2008 showcase. Both graduated from NIFT Delhi in 2000.

Neeraj has represented India in the prestigious “Admiralty Needle” contest held annually in Russia. Expressing their excitement, Alpana and Neeraj said, “Participation in the upcoming tenth anniversary of the Miami Fashion Week is a unique opportunity that emerging designers like us have received, thanks to FDCI.

It feels like a dream to be able to showcase at an international fashion week so early in our careers. We are ecstatic about our selection and will give it our best shot at being one of the best representations of India there.”

Ashish, Viral and Vikrant of Virtues, the trio based in Ahmedabad, made their second innings on the WIFW runway. Their designs have a strong element of India. Indian heritage and vintage textile inspires the team, as their collections revive dying Indian craft traditions by fusing them with Western design.

A graduate from NIFT, Viral has interned with Christian Dior, while Ashish has done his MBA from Australia and Vikrant looks into the business model of their collection.

Commenting about their participation at the Miami Fashion Week Ashish, Viral and Vikrant said, “We are extremely excited about our participation at the Miami Fashion Week through FDCI."

Rathi Vinay Jha, Director General, FDCI said, “I am delighted that more and more fashion designers are gaining recognition in the international market."

Sumeet Nair, Executive Director, FDCI said, “As the apex fashion body, our aim is to constantly create new opportunities for Indian designers as well as facilitate their participation at international platforms."

Manish Arora, Anamika Khanna, Phalguni and Shane Peacock have also showcased their collection at the Miami Fashion Week. A five-day series of fashion shows and educational seminars, the Miami Fashion Week brings together a gamut of promising and reputed designers from across the globe.
