INSEAD case study on MAS Holdings

June 05, 2009 - Sri Lanka

The INSEAD case study on MAS Holdings was awarded an ECCH European Case Award 2009. The case, “MAS Holdings: Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility in the Apparel Industry”, written by Professor Jonathan Story and Noshua Watson of the INSEAD Business School, France published in March 2006, won the award for Economics, Politics and Business Environment. INSEAD has also published a second case titled, “MAS Holdings: Leveraging Corporate Responsibility” written by Professor Amitava Chattopadhyay.

The case is focused on using corporate social responsibility as a strategic tool in global competition. As a manufacturer of intimate apparel, sportswear and casual wear for brands such as Victoria’s Secret, Nike and Marks & Spencer, MAS had made a concerted investment in being a socially responsible company. How could it remain committed to the cause and at the same time ensure that its efforts in corporate social responsibility paid off? How could the company stay competitive when other vendors focused exclusively on achieving lower cost? These are the questions answered through the case as they embarked on another phase of corporate social responsibility.

The European Case Awards have been presented annually since 1991 by ecch, an independent organisation dedicated to promoting the case method of learning. The Awards recognise the authors and institutions of cases that have achieved the highest growth in popularity worldwide.

INSEAD Business School won four of the nine categories at the competition, a testament to the high quality of teaching materials being produced by the faculty. These winning cases were chosen for their popularity in universities and business schools worldwide.
