Four Reconstruction Opportunity Zones proposed

September 18, 2009 - Pakistan

The US administration a few months back had proposed setting up of Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (ROZs) in the disturbed areas of Pakistan. The Ministry of Commerce (MoC) has now proposed setting up of four such zones in the country.

According to the working paper submitted by the MoC, these ROZs will be set up in North West Frontier Province, Balochistan, FATA region and Kashmir. Goods, produced in these zones, inclusive of textiles and garments would qualify for duty free exports to the US.

The MoC has proposed setting up of a Programme Management Unit (PMU) with initial investment of Rs 80.60 million in the ministry for a two-year period to develop a conceptual and institutional framework and steer ROZs authority process forward.

These proposed zones would help provide Pakistan with an opportunity to enhance its exports to USA and stimulate economic growth in the under developed areas of NWFP, Balochistan, Kashmir and FATA.
