Insights

  • ChatGPT now helps users with shopping by showing curated product options in visual carousels, based on query intent and third-party data.
  • Products are selected independently—not as ads—and factors like price, reviews, and user preferences are considered.
  • Prices and merchant listings come from third-party sources and may not always reflect the lowest price or most recent updates.
Users often turn to ChatGPT for help researching and buying products. Now, when a query shows shopping intent, ChatGPT will display relevant product options in visually rich carousels, offer detailed product information, and link to external sites for more details or to make a purchase—available in GPT-4o and 4o-mini.

Products shown in ChatGPT’s visual carousels are selected independently and are not advertisements. A product appears when ChatGPT determines it's relevant to the user’s intent, based on the query and available context—such as memories or custom instructions.

For example, if a user asks for goofy costumes for two large dogs, ChatGPT considers general factors like price, ratings, and usability, along with specific user criteria such as size or style. If the user had previously expressed a dislike for clowns, the model may avoid clown-themed costumes.

Because the model interprets intent, it may sometimes misjudge preferences—for instance, excluding clown costumes a user might have actually liked. Users can clarify their needs, and ChatGPT will adjust its suggestions accordingly, OpenAI said on its website.

When selecting products to display, ChatGPT takes into account several factors, including structured metadata from third-party providers—such as price, product descriptions—and additional third-party content like customer reviews. It also considers model responses generated by ChatGPT before any new search is performed, as well as OpenAI’s safety standards.

The weight given to each factor depends on the user's specific needs. For example, if a user sets a budget of $30, price becomes a key consideration. If price isn’t specified as a priority, the model may focus more on aspects like quality, popularity, or user preferences, the company said.

ChatGPT simplifies product titles and descriptions based on data from third-party providers. This helps ensure clarity and consistency, as merchants often use different wording for the same or similar products.

Some product images feature labels such as ‘Budget-friendly’ or ‘Most popular'. These labels are generated by ChatGPT using available data, which may include third-party sources. They are not guarantees or verified claims and may not reflect the full market landscape. For instance, a ‘Budget-friendly’ label might indicate that many reviewers mentioned good value, not that it’s the lowest-priced option.

ChatGPT also generates summaries of product reviews, highlighting commonly reported pros and cons based on publicly available feedback. Some listings may show star ratings and review counts, which are sourced from third-party providers. These may be aggregated and may not match ratings found on any single retail website. Where possible, ChatGPT provides links to the original sources for further review. However, the product reviews and ratings are not verified by OpenAI.

Product listings shown by ChatGPT include prices sourced from third-party providers. Clicking on a listed price may reveal additional pricing options from other merchants offering the same product. Typically, the initial price shown reflects the first merchant listed, which may not always be the lowest available price.

When a user clicks on a product, ChatGPT displays a list of merchants offering it. This list is generated using merchant and product metadata provided by third-party sources. Currently, the order of merchants is determined by these providers; ChatGPT does not re-rank merchants based on factors such as price, shipping speed, or return policies, it added.
