Reacting to the recent UK government’s document titled ‘Our Plan to Rebuild’, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) said UK retailers desperately need clarity in the rules regarding when and how they can open, details of which are still lacking. Safety must be the primary concern in these decisions, rather than size or type of shop, it said.

“The BRC has worked with the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW) to draw up social distancing guidance for shops that are preparing to reopen, learning from the experiences of thousands of supermarkets and other essential retailers who have been doing so successfully since lockdown," BRC chief executive Helen Dickinson said in a statement.

‘Covid-19 Secure Guidelines’ are referred to throughout but no exact detail is given. The guidance applies in England and it is important to check the provisions in the devolved administrations to avoid missing any specific variations, BRC added.
