Macy's will raise the minimum wage of its more than 100,000 US employees to $15 an hour by May, the department store chain recently said. The decision reportedly is a result of a nationwide pandemic-induced labour shortage that has led to retailers raising wages and offering more benefits this year. Many stores worry not having enough workers during the holiday shopping season.

Macy's said it would invest to increase compensation and benefits for employees across the company, and spend $35 million on a debt-free education benefit programme for US workers over the next four years, US media reported.

Once the increases take effect, Macy's average base pay will be above $17 an hour, the company said.

In September, Amazon.com said it had increased its average starting wage doe domestic workers to more than $18 an hour, while Walmart has also touted raises in average hourly wages this year.
