Annual inflation down to 1.7% in euro area in Jan 2026: Eurostat

The euro area annual inflation rate was 1.7 per cent in January—down from 2 per cent in December last, according to Eurostat; a year earlier, the rate was 2.5 per cent.
Annual inflation in the EU was 2 per cent in January—down from 2.3 per cent in December; a year earlier, it was 2.8 per cent.
Compared with December 2025, annual inflation fell in 23 member states, remained stable in one and rose in three.

The euro area annual inflation rate was 1.7 per cent in January this year—down from 2 per cent in December last, according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union (EU). A year earlier, the rate was 2.5 per cent.

Annual inflation in the EU was 2 per cent in January—down from 2.3 per cent in December. A year earlier, it was 2.8 per cent.

The lowest annual rates were registered in France (0.4 per cent), Denmark (0.6 per cent), Finland and Italy (both 1 per cent), while the highest annual rates were recorded in Romania (8.5 per cent), Slovakia (4.3 per cent) and Estonia (3.8 per cent).

Compared with December 2025, annual inflation fell in 23 member states, remained stable in one and rose in three, an Eurostat release said.
