More than a third—35 per cent—of US consumers use shopping apps between two and five times a week, while 28 per cent use them at least once a day, according to a survey by Visual Objects, a portfolio website that showcases work from top creative firms from around the world. As more people download such apps, the more likely those are to occupy people's time.

The company’s data supports findings from another survey, which concluded that the number of retail apps on the average smartphone doubled within the last year.

When people use shopping apps, they are most likely to use an app from mass merchant retailers like Target, Walmart, or Costco (81 per cent), pure online retailers like Amazon or Overstock (77 per cent), or apparel retailers (79 per cent), according to a press release from the company.

Nearly 80 per cent of people use shopping apps when they are at home instead of on the go or in another store, the survey found.

The apps that see the heaviest in-home use are pure online retailer apps (92 per cent), mass merchant retailer apps (81 per cent), apparel apps (79 per cent) and convenience store apps (62 per cent).

Visual Objects surveyed 501 smartphone users who use retail apps at least once per month. (DS)
