91-year-old khadi institution in India's Karnataka revived

The 91-year-old Heritage Bandanavalu Khadi institution in Badanavalu village in Karnataka’s Mysuru district, which was shut 25 years ago after caste violence, was recently revived. A divisional office of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) also opened in Hubli after 30 years followed by an artisans’ conclave that attracted 6,000 participants.
Inaugurating the Hubli office, union minister of state for drinking water and sanitation Ramesh Chandappa Jigajinagi said that the central government was committed to safeguarding the interests of weavers and has released Rs 32.28 crore for khadi institutions in Karnataka, according to a news agency report.
The heritage institution was started in 1926 by four downtrodden women on the advice of Mahatma Gandhi to adopt khadi as a vehicle for self-reliance. (DS)
