The guideline should be implemented in a fruitful way, according to Asif Ashraf, a director of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporter Association (BGMEA).
He said buyers have different requirements to ensure safety and the domestic garment makers will have to build up capacity in chemical management, he said.
On behalf of the German government, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is helping the Bangladesh commerce ministry to develop the guideline.
The guideline is aimed at protecting workers from chemicals, and prevent or reduce the incidence of chemical-induced illnesses and injuries.
According to the draft, the guideline would be applied to any work activity in textiles and readymade garment manufacturing in where chemicals are used.
